Dear Parents and Students, I am a graduate student at Northeastern University in my last semester of a Master of Arts in Teaching program. My focuses for the program have been history and special education at the secondary level (middle and high school). I will be student teaching in this classroom from the beginning of the school year (August) through roughly Christmas break (December). I am working with Mr. Tivnan and with Mr. Hurley and our plan for my practicum is to utilize a gradual release of responsibility model in similar fashion to what we use with students in the classroom. This model has the mentor teachers modeling teaching strategies and curriculum instruction techniques first, followed by a period of time where we will co-teach as I learn to utilize the strategies and become familiar with school practices, and the semester will conclude with me essentially taking on full responsibility for the class and implementing all or most instruction with the supervision of my mentor teachers.
I am so excited to be student teaching at Malden High School and I look forward to getting to know each of you. Please be patient with me as I learn your names and as we get to know each others learning and teaching styles.
I also attended Northeastern University for my undergraduate degree and I graduated in 2007 with a degree in Political Science and Sociology. In college I was given the opportunity to study abroad and I did so in Ghana which is in West Africa. This was the most meaningful experience of my life so far and I love discussing my time there.
I grew up in Dartmouth, MA, which is about an hour south of the city of Boston and my younger brother and my parents still live there. I played field hockey and ran track in high school.
When I’m not here at Malden High School or in classes at Northeastern, I like to run on the Charles River, read historical fiction novels, watch or attend Boston sporting events, spend time with my friends and my family, and cook.
I am looking forward to a really great semester with you guys!
